Treasures from the archives: Historical recordings

August 3, 2024

This post features two great violinists, whose recordings may be less familiar to you – Erika Morini and Ginette Neveu.

Erika Mornini, born in 1904 was, at the time, one of the most famous violinists in the world. Here are two recordings from early in her career. Despite the album cover, this is a recording of Sarasate Waltz from Faust Op 13  (written in 1874)

Tchaikovsky Capriccio Waltz (1880) Erika Morini

Ginette Neveu, born in 1919 studied with Georges Enescu and Carl Flesch. She was the first prize winner in the 1934 Wieniawski competition at the age of 15. David Oistrakh, who was 27, was awarded the second place. She didn’t have a chance to make very many recordings since she died in a plane crash at age 30 on her way to Tenerife for a recital.
